DjangoFest Colorado 2014

June 13-14, 2014

DjangoFest Colorado is Back!

After a two year hiatus, DjangoFest returns to Colorado and this time it’s right in Denver!  This unique two day event will take place in two venues ,  the The Stage at Mi Vida Strings and the lovely, historical Holiday Event Center.

On Friday, June 13th, from Holland, the Robin Nolan Trio will give two concerts, 8 and 10pm, in this intimate, 50 seat, ‘living room’ type concert.  This is a ‘not to be missed’ event for Gypsy Jazz fans and jazz fans alike to get up close and personal with one of the masters of the genre.

On Saturday, June 14th, at 8pm the Hot Club d'Europe, featuring Olli Soikkeli, Tim Kliphuis and Simon Planting will bring their talents together with special guest Robin Nolan for an extraordinary display of virtuosity and musicianship.   This is the ‘real deal’,   Gypsy Jazz played by four of the hottest players in Europe today. Opening the program will be Denver’s own Swing Je T'aime, a stand out in the burgeoning ranks of local Django Style groups.

And as always, we will offer a world class series of workshops, designed for both the beginner and the advanced, with openings for both guitarist and violinists interested in pursuing this style.  Please see the schedule.

Come help us celebrate our first year back in Colorado and our continued partnership with the brilliantly up and coming, Denver based, Aaron Walker Music.   It’s great to be in Colorado again and we are looking forward to making this the first of many DjangoFests in Denver.

DFCO Workshops

    Robin Nolan’s Gypsy Jazz Workshop

When you walk away from this workshop on your way to the Djam you will have a newfound confidence in your playing and more to the point a new stash of Ninja moves which will make your playing sound better than ever before.

It is Robin’s mission to give as much of what he knows about music, the guitar, and Gypsy Jazz to you within the short amount of time you have to share together.

In his workshops you sit in a circle so every student can see each other and are included in the music making. Guitars are out of their cases, in tune and ready to go.

All you need to bring is your instrument and your passion for Gypsy Jazz.

Within the framework of some Gypsy Jazz classics, Robin will show you some of his favorite and most useful ideas:

    • Robin will help you eliminate uncertainty from your soloing with his “Anti Waffle” approach.
    • Robin gets to the bottom of playing ‘le pompe’ swing rhythm.  He has developed a foolproof method of teaching this essential skill. If you can count to 4 you’re almost there. You’ll also learn the coolest rhythm embellishments and exactly where to put them.
    • You’ll look at Bossa Dorado and Robin will teach some Ninja moves that kick butt over the tune. Also the Gypsy Bossa rhythm which is vital to get right.
    • You will hone in on some major key swingers like ‘Djangology’, ‘All of Me’ & ‘J’attendrai’ and learn some cool lead lines as well as chordal ideas and voicings which will have you playing these tunes with new depth and confidence.
    • You will do the same with some minor key swingers like ‘Minor Blues’, ‘Minor Swing’ & ‘Swing Gitane’ learning some spicy Gypsy licks over these tunes, as well as some from Robin’s own personal stash.
    • Robin will show you some killer ways of approaching Nuages (Django’s most famous ballad) which will encompass both harmonic & rhythmical options giving you a new and fresh look at this musical gem.

So if you’re ready to start Djamming with way more confidence and skill pronto, plus have some serious fun at the same time then make your move now and sign up for this unique experience while there’s still spaces left.

    Mastering Gypsy Jazz Rhythm

Here is a very rare opportunity to learn from one of the best Gypsy Jazz rhythm guitarists in the genre – Kevin Nolan, who has played with most major Gypsy Jazz artists and is the rhythmic foundation to the Robin Nolan Trio.  Kevin will show you how to play in the various styles including La Pompe (traditional Gypsy swing), Modern Gypsy rhythm, bolero, Gypsy bossa and other exciting Latin-based Gypsy styles.  He will not only show you the basics of these styles but also the subtle nuances that give each of these styles character and your own personal identity stamp.  It has been years since Kevin has given such a workshop in the United States – do not miss this chance to learn from this master guitarist!

Due to unforseen circumstances this workshop will be taught by Robin Nolan.

  • Olli Soikkeli

    Gypsy Jazz "Combining styles"

Olli has played with many Dutch Gypsies guitar masters like Paulus Schäfer and Feigelie Prisor. He's also known for playing with American musicians like Bucky Pizzarelli, Frank Vignola and Nicki Parrott. In this unique and personal workshop, Olli demonstrates how he developed his own style from these different influences. He then teaches how to apply licks and lines from other styles of music to Gypsy Jazz and Gypsy jazz ideas to other styles.

Olli Soikkeli, still in his early 20’s, was born in Nurmes, Finland and started playing guitar at age 12. After a few years of playing Olli was introduced to the music of great Django Reinhardt and Gypsy Jazz has been Ollis main focus ever since. Despite his young age he’s already played with stars such as Bucky Pizzarelli, Andreas Öberg, and Paulus Schäfer. In 2011 Olli recorded his first album "Trois Générations" and in 2012 he recorded his second album "Kouvola Junction".

While their performances are musically satisfying to the master's- and doctorate- level professionals in their ensemble, each song is crafted with the goal of maintaining a general accessibility.  Through their exciting shows--which uniquely balance musical familiarity and newness--they have achieved a rare level of multi-generational appeal.
