DjangoFest Colorado is Back!
After a two year hiatus, DjangoFest returns to Colorado and this time it’s right in Denver! This unique two day event will take place in two venues , the The Stage at Mi Vida Strings and the lovely, historical Holiday Event Center.
On Friday, June 13th, from Holland, the Robin Nolan Trio will give two concerts, 8 and 10pm, in this intimate, 50 seat, ‘living room’ type concert. This is a ‘not to be missed’ event for Gypsy Jazz fans and jazz fans alike to get up close and personal with one of the masters of the genre.
On Saturday, June 14th, at 8pm the Hot Club d'Europe, featuring Olli Soikkeli, Tim Kliphuis and Simon Planting will bring their talents together with special guest Robin Nolan for an extraordinary display of virtuosity and musicianship. This is the ‘real deal’, Gypsy Jazz played by four of the hottest players in Europe today. Opening the program will be Denver’s own Swing Je T'aime, a stand out in the burgeoning ranks of local Django Style groups.
And as always, we will offer a world class series of workshops, designed for both the beginner and the advanced, with openings for both guitarist and violinists interested in pursuing this style. Please see the schedule.
Come help us celebrate our first year back in Colorado and our continued partnership with the brilliantly up and coming, Denver based, Aaron Walker Music. It’s great to be in Colorado again and we are looking forward to making this the first of many DjangoFests in Denver.

Robin Nolan has been an international star in the Gypsy Jazz arena for more than 20 years. Born in Vietnam, English by birthright, and living in Holland, Robin has played on every major continent and at every major Gypsy Jazz Festival in the world. The Robin Nolan Trio was personally invited by George Harrison to perform at a private party, and Robin has played with artists ranging from every major Gypsy Jazz artist to rock legends Albert Lee and Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones. Robin is also a pioneer and one of the top instructors in the Gypsy Jazz world, having taught courses around the world, on the internet, and by books and CDs for more than 15 years.
One of the great hot beds of contemporary Gypsy Jazz is Holland, and this lineup is among the best there can be! Among them, this group of extraordinary musicians represents every facet of Gypsy Jazz music from heritage and culture to innovation, musicianship and leadership in the greatest Gypsy Jazz bands during the last 20 years.
Olli Soikkeli, still in his early 20’s, was born in Nurmes, Finland and started playing guitar at age 12. After a few years of playing Olli was introduced to the music of great Django Reinhardt and Gypsy Jazz has been Ollis main focus ever since. Despite his young age he’s already played with stars such as Bucky Pizzarelli, Andreas Öberg, and Paulus Schäfer. In 2011 Olli recorded his first album "Trois Générations" and in 2012 he recorded his second album "Kouvola Junction".
The Neatherland’s Tim Kliphuis is an award-winning violinist and a legend in the Gypsy Jazz world. He has worked with the “best of the best” including The Rosenberg Trio, Fapy Lafertin and Angelo Debarre. He has performed at all the major Django festivals worldwide and is seen by many as the inheritor of Stéphane Grappelli’s crown. His latest CD, “The Grappelli Album”, has received rave reviews.
Simon Planting is the undisputed leader among Gypsy jazz bassists, having played with the crème de la crème of jazz manouche guitarists such as Fapy Lafertin, Jimmy Rosenberg, Angelo Debarre, Dorado, Tchavalo and Samson Schmitt, Robin Nolan, Andreas Oberg, John Jorgenson, Gonzalo Bergara, and other jazz greats, Larry Coryell, Bill Frisell, and Howard Alden to name a few. The Dutch native, who now lives in San Francisco, has toured the world numerous times playing Gypsy Jazz, and he has been a player on countless classic recordings of Gypsy Jazz during the past 30 years.
Denver’s own Swing Je T'aime plays a listener-friendly blend of music including fresh takes on classic favorites, unburied treasures, and innovative, original songs. They are a swing band, unconfined, whose primary influences include legendary two-fingered trailblazer Django Reinhardt and his Hot Club of France; the genre-bending "little orchestra" from Portland, Pink Martini; and accessible poly-stylism. While their performances are musically satisfying to the master's- and doctorate- level professionals in their ensemble, each song is crafted with the goal of maintaining a general accessibility. Through their exciting shows--which uniquely balance musical familiarity and newness--they have achieved a rare level of multi-generational appeal.
Built in 1914, the Holiday Theatre, now Event Center, has a rich story to tell. Conveniently located in Denver's historic Highlands neighborhood, steps from downtown, minutes to the highway and just an hour away from the mountains.
